Brampton (Canada), July 30 (Dr. Mithu Muhammad) —
The Shaheed Kiranjeet Kaur Mehalkalan Memorial Committee Brampton is organizing a special memorial event on the occasion of the 28th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Kiranjeet Kaur, on Saturday, August 10, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Cassie Campbell Community Centre, Chinguacousy Road, Brampton.
This event is dedicated to the centenary of the passing of Ghadri Gulab Kaur.
While giving information to the press, program organizers Gurmeet Sukhpur, Balwinder Barnala, and Mandeep shared that on July 29, 1997, a tragic incident took place in Mehalkalan, Punjab, where a student named Kiranjeet Kaur from Mata Sahib Kaur Girls College became the victim of gang rape and murder by a notorious gang that was being sheltered by the police and politicians.
This was not just a case of injustice but exposed the deep-rooted political and police-backed hooliganism present in society. A long and determined public struggle was waged under the leadership of the Action Committee Mehalkalan, which evolved from a local protest into a broader symbol of resistance against oppression, discrimination, and violence against women — becoming a significant chapter in the women’s liberation movement.
Speakers at the event will include Gurmeet Sukhpur, Balwinder Barnala, Baldev Rahipa, Kuldeep Nabhoparae, Amardeep Pandher, and Mandeep.
The organizers have appealed to all that as long as exploitation and injustice continue, the struggle against them must also go on. They urged families to attend the memorial event and contribute to preserving this legacy for future generations by sharing thoughts, experiences, and solidarity.
