A Tribute to Ghadri Gulab Kaur’s Martyrdom, Call for People’s Unity and Social Awareness
Brampton (Canada), August 12, (Dr. Mithu Muhammad) Today, the 28th death anniversary of Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur of Mehal Kalan was commemorated in the city of Brampton, Canada, with great honor and dignity. The memorial event was dedicated to the inspiring martyrdom of Ghadri Gulab Kaur, where serious discussions were held on oppression against women, superstitions, genocide in Palestine, commercial wars, and fundamental issues faced by the people of Canada and immigrants.
Gurmeet Sukhpura spoke in detail about the historical aspects of the Kiranjit Kaur People’s Movement. He stated that this movement is a living example of people’s unity against political and judicial alliances. He described the collective struggle for the release of three public leaders—Manjit Dhaner, Narayan Dutt, and Prem Kumar, who were imprisoned—as a heritage of people’s movements.
Balwinder Barnala (Leader, Rationalist Society International) narrated the saga of Ghadri Gulab Kaur’s sacrifice, stating that in today’s times, the role of women in social development is decisive. He conveyed the message of reviving the legacy of the Ghadar Movement.
Baldev Rahipa (President, Rationalist Society Rationalist Canada) said that awareness and struggle are necessary against the orthodox values, superstitions, and communal divisions prevailing in society.
Mandeep (Montreal Youth Students Organization) stated that imperialist powers are burdening people economically through commercial invasions and genocidal wars. He appealed to people worldwide to unite on issues such as inflation and unemployment.
Malook Singh Kahlon (Leader, Punjabi Literary Society Canada) called for connecting the new generation with literature alongside the struggle for fundamental rights.
Dr. Mithu Muhammad described the Kiranjit People’s Movement as a beacon of light for people’s struggles.
Among the speakers who participated in the event were Kuldeep Boparai, Dr. Satinderjit Kaur, Comrade Lal Singh Bains, Sohan Singh Dhindsa, Nirmal Sandhu, and Amardeep Singh. Special support for the event came from Jagjit Thikriwal, Jodh Singh Jawandha, Barjinder Singh Brar, Bakhshish Singh Kapurthala, Balwinder Singh Sidhu, Satwinder Kaur Mann, Madam Seema, Madam Murti, Wazir Gill Patti Bathinda, Dr. Mahinder Singh Gill, and Sukhbir Bhullar.
Master Ram Kumar Bhadaur and Baljit Bains kept the audience engaged with revolutionary songs, while Khushpal Garewal performed the role of stage secretary.
Resolutions passed at the gathering included demands to stop the war imposed on the Palestinian people, to launch a fair program for students in Canada whose work permits are expiring, and to lift the ban on 25 books in India.
The Rationalist Society Canada also organized an exhibition of progressive literature, which received high praise from attendees.
In conclusion, Lecturer Gurmeet Singh Sukhpura expressed gratitude to all supporters and appealed for the formation of a committee to address local Brampton issues such as the health system, unemployment, thefts, and skyrocketing inflation—a proposal that received strong approval.
